How can a lactation consultant help me?

You can visit a lactation consultant while you’re pregnant, right after you give birth or several months into breastfeeding – whenever you feel the need. When you are expecting, the consultant can help you prepare for breastfeeding. After your baby is born, a lactation consultant can help with any problems or concerns related to breastfeeding your baby including common breastfeeding challenges.

A lactation consultant is trained and certified to help you with any problems or concerns related to breastfeeding your baby and lactating. She will work with you directly to troubleshoot any problems and answer any questions you may have related to breastfeeding your baby. They can offer practical advice such as how to hold your baby during feedings, latch-on difficulties, dealing with sore nipples or mastitis, how to use a breast pump, developing a feeding schedule, when and how to wean and more.
